William Sumpter

William Otto Sumpter, 82, of Atwater (formerly of Litchfield), passed away Sunday February 23, 2020 at 8:30 p.m. at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Born June 3, 1937 to Norman William and Vera Christine (Jackson) Sumpter.  He graduated from Carlinville High School with the class of 1955. He married Josephine Elizabeth “Betty” (Sendig) on August 17, 1958 in St. Timothy Church, Litchfield.

Mr. Sumpter was a self-employed farmer and won a State Farmer Award for his achievements.  He drove a fuel truck for Wolff Oil Company for several years and he owned and operated a Service Station in Litchfield on the corner of State and Union Ave. 

Mr. Sumpter was a member of St. Timothy United Methodist Church of Litchfield. He was a past President of the Litchfield Jaycees, a member of the Litchfield Boat and Ski Club, Auxiliary Policeman with the Litchfield Police Department, served as a 4th Ward Alderman for several years as well as a Precinct Committeeman. He was a member of the Montgomery County Republicans and part of the Litchfield Beautification that planted crab apple trees on Union Ave. and State Street. In addition to his wife, he is survived by;

1 son; David Sumpter, of Litchfield

1 sister; Norma “Jean” Chism, of Chesterfield, IL;

6 Grandchildren; Jennifer (Craig) Rimar, Steven (Britanie) Sumpter, Kristina (Josh) Waggoner, Daniel (Sarah) Sumpter, Jonathan (Kimberly) Sumpter, Samantha (Dennis) Hamilton.

12 great-grandchildren; Madison, Molly and Morgan Rimar; Nora Sumpter; Eli and Isaak Waggoner; Levi and Hannah Sumpter; Brooklynn Sumpter; Zoey, Dennis IV and Olivia Hamilton

Several nieces and nephews;

His beloved dog, Lucky

Mr. Sumpter is preceded in death by his parents; 1 Daughter, Susan Sumpter-Zoschke; 1 brother, David L. Sumpter; and 1 sister, Sharon Dittmer.   

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, February 28, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield.  The Rev. Jake Wetterlin of St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Litchfield will officiate.  Burial will be in the Bethel Ridge Cemetery in Atwater.  Friends may call Thursday, from 4:00p.m. until 7:00p.m. at the Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield.  The family suggests memorials to Adopt a Pet or Carlinville FFA Alumni.
