William Harmon Obituary

William “Bill” Roy Harmon, 89, of Hillsboro, formerly of Litchfield, passed away Friday, January 31, 2020, at 6:40 A.M. at Montgomery Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hillsboro.

Born in Litchfield, IL on November 21, 1930.  A son of William Clinton and Dolly (Small) Harmon. He attended Litchfield Schools and eventually received his GED.  He married the former Margaret Ann Kalaher, on May 6, 1950 at the St. Mary’s Church Rectory in Litchfield. Bill attended United Television Technical School. He went on to own Bill’s TV Shop.  Bill went on to work for International Paper Co., where he was a printer machine operator. While working at International Paper, Bill was busy building the house where his family lived for many years on  Historic Old Route 66.

Bill’s main job was in the auto parts business. He was the parts manager for Weidler Motor Company and the former S&L – McKay Auto Parts until his retirement. He and his wife, Margaret, owned and operated Harmon’s Country Catering, for 20 some years, with Bill retiring in 2002. Bill was known for his fried chicken recipe and carved roast beef.  A handyman, Bill could repair almost anything.  After retiring from the catering business, Bill and his wife Margaret spent the winters in Sarasota, FL, with their daughter, Dr. Jan Harmon.

Bill enjoyed dancing, fishing and camping.  He was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Litchfield, and attended Mass at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Hillsboro. He enjoyed participating in various church functions such as Breaking Bread and the Spring Fling.  He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He battled with Parkinson’s disease the past ten years. In 2012, Bill and Margaret moved to Hillsboro to be near their son and daughter-in-law, John and Sally Harmon. Bill entered the nursing home in July of 2019.

In addition to his wife Margaret, Bill is survived by two sons; John (Sally) Harmon of Hillsboro, and Robert J. “Bob”(Beth) Harmon of Litchfield, a daughter, Dr. Jan (husband Charles Saucier) Harmon of Madison, MS., Seven grandchildren; Craig (Amber) Harmon of Butler, IL., Josh (Amanda) Gorsage of Witt, IL., Kerby (Brianne) Harmon of Raymond, IL., Holly (Randy) Leetham, of Hillsboro, Kyle Harmon of St. Peters, MO., Meghan(Greg Bishop) Harmon of Divernon, IL., and Tessa (Spencer) Pulliam of Rochester, IL.  Ten great-grandchildren; Carlee, McKenna and Henry Harmon, Reed Harmon, Abigail, Elijah, Canaan, Gabe, Rocco, and Silas Gorsage. Two brothers; Carl (Mary Carol) Simmons, of Odin, IL., Clinton “Butch” (Laura) Harmon of Phoenix, AZ.

Bill is preceded in death by five brothers; Tillman Harmon, Charles “Chaw” Simmons, Jr., George and Charles Melton, Winston Allen.  Two sisters; Doris Driscoll and Mary Ellen Stride.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Litchfield.  The Rev. Dan Willenborg, will preside. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Litchfield.  Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield.  A prayer service will be held at 7:00p.m.  The family suggests memorials to Holy Family Church.
