Stanley George Horst, 92, passed away on October 16, 2022 in Springfield, IL. He was born April 13, 1930 in Hoyleton, Illinois, the son of Louis and Cleone Horst. He graduated from Nashville High School in 1948 and Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, in 1952 with a B.S. in Physical Education and in 1959, with an M.S. in Physical Education, where he was captain and MVP of the basketball team. He was a veteran of the Air Force serving in French Morocco and Whitman Air Base in Missouri. He married Dorothy Mae Hill on June 1, 1957. She preceded him in death on September 25, 1980. He married Brenda Kay Ussery (nee Rees) on July 13, 2000. She passed away December 10, 2013.
Mr. Horst taught school for 36 years; 4 years at Ramsey High School, 14 years at Hillsboro High School, and 18 years in Litchfield where he was a coach and athletic director before he retired in 1992.
He was a member of the Union Avenue Christian Church, Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association, and The American Legion Post 436.
Surviving are daughters Cindy Cross (nee Horst) and her husband Brad of Maple Grove, MN; Susan Horst of Springfield, IL; sons Kent Horst and wife Tara of Arlington, TX and Brian Horst and wife Michele of Castle Rock, CO; and stepdaughter Kara Hargis (nee Ussery) and husband Brad Hargis.
Surviving are grandchildren Andrea Kreit (nee Cross), Kennan Cross, Taylor Horst, Sophie Horst, Michael Horst, Rees Hargis, Rylan Hargis, and great grandchildren Lysander and Roderik Kreit. Preceding Stan in death are grandson Rutger Horst on December 14, 2002 and brother Wallace Horst on February 25, 2009.
Memorials can be sent to Union Avenue Christian Church and the Litchfield Sports Boosters.
Services will be held at Union Avenue Christian Church, Thursday, October 20, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., with a fellowship luncheon to follow. Nancy Bandy will officiate. Friends may call from 9:00 until the time of service. Burial will be held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Centralia, IL.
