Jerry Lee Bergman, 76, of rural Mt. Olive, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 9:03 p.m. at HSHS St John’s Hospital. He was born January 29, 1943 in Carlinville, IL., a son of Harold George and Evelyn Lucille (Shipp) Bergman. Mr. Bergman was a Vietnam Era Veteran serving in the U.S. Army Missile Defense. Mr. Bergman graduated from Litchfield High School with the Class of 1961. He went on to receive his Associate’s degree from SIUE. Mr. Bergman married the former Melanie Louise Caldwell on April 29, 1967 in Lawton, OK and she survives. Mr. Bergman worked at Granite City Steel as a Blacksmith for 40 years. In addition, he also farmed with his brother, Dallas, for several years in South and Southeast Litchfield. Mr. Bergman was a member of the American Legion Post 436 and The Illinois Valley Blacksmith Association. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Melanie, on their Honda Goldwing Trike.

Mr. Bergman is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sharon Heitzman and Evelyn “Janie” White; sister-in-law, Janet Bergman; and brothers-in-law, John White; Tommy Ogle.
Funeral services will be held Fri., Jan. 24, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Rev. Skyler Elmer of the Christian Church of Litchfield will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Litchfield. Visitation will be held Thurs., Jan. 23, 2020 from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
