Gerry Johnston, 96, passed away at 12:57 p.m., Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Litchfield Health & Rehab. in Litchfield, IL. She was born May 4, 1929, in Litchfield, the daughter of Byron Brooks and Verna Lillian (Besanceney) Bowles. Gerry graduated from Litchfield High School in 1947. She married Carl Eugene Johnston on June 6, 1948, in Litchfield. He preceded her in death on August 27, 1984.
Gerry had worked for First National Bank, Madison Park School and First Baptist Church in Litchfield. She was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church in Barnett. She had been a member of Phi Sigma Nu Sorority, St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, Keenagers, and served on the Litchfield Carnegie Library Board as well as many other committees. She was a longtime leader of GA’s and had taught Sunday School for many years at the First Baptist Church. She loved to travel and visited several countries. Gerry loved to entertain and often hosted game nights and supper at her home with her friends.
Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Ron Norris of Litchfield, a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kim Johnston of Wisconsin, five grandchildren, Trisha Hoagland (John) of Waterloo, IL, Cameron Norris (Jillian) of Austin, TX, Corey, Courtney and Christian Johnston, six great grandchildren, Ava and Easton Hoagland, Jace, Brice, Emma and Rowan Norris as well as several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Scott Johnston, her in-laws, Oscar and Margaret Bockewitz and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Derald and Bertie Bowles and Lester and Joanne Bowles.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield.
