Dorothy Prange Sloss Obituary

Dorothy Marilyn (Benning) Prange Sloss of Raymond, passed away at Memorial Hospital in Springfield Friday, April 12, 2024.  Dorothy was given life by her Creator on February 26, 1930, one of eight, the daughter of Louis and Emma (Hudson) Benning in Raymond Township, Raymond, Illinois.  She received the gift of Holy Baptism on September 3, 1930 becoming a child of God and publicly confessed her faith being confirmed on May 20, 1945 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Harvel.

Dorothy attended Lakeside #2 country grade school and graduated from Raymond High School with the Class of 1949. She then attended Brown’s Business College in Springfield and lived and worked in Springfield. She and Charles W. Prange were married July 20, 1952 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Harvel, and resided on the Prange family farm north of Harvel. Upon the death of her parents, she raised her youngest sister, Virginia, and youngest brother, Ivan. On October 26, 1995, she and George A. Sloss were married and resided in Raymond, Illinois.

Dorothy was very active at Trinity Lutheran Church teaching Bible studies, Sunday school for over 50 years, Walther League Counselor, church Outreach program, and on various other committees. She also served as the Harvel Post Office Mistress for many years. Dorothy was an accomplished artist painting barns, birds and cats on canvas and rocks, receiving correspondence from all over the United States with pictures of their pets to paint on a rock. She conducted a Bible Study at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro for over 30 years.

Dorothy’s green thumb and many hours of work leant to a beautiful yard producing flowers that she shared with the church, weddings, and her any friends and relatives. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds, caring for baby birds that were brought to her or fell out of their nests.

Dorothy is survived by a sister, Virginia Rinella of Carbondale, a brother, Ivan (Karen) Benning of Harvel, sister-in-law Ruth Benning of Raymond, as well as many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, her brothers Russell, Harold, Ralph, Paul, David, ad sister, Joyce Weihe.
