Dennis Edwin Coatney, 76, of Litchfield, IL., passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 6:35 p.m. at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Born in Litchfield, the son of Karl Edwin and Helen Marie (Bierbaum) Coatney. He was a graduate of Litchfield Community High School, Class of 1965. Mr. Coatney was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and serviced during the Vietnam War. He married the former Peggy JoAnn Roberts and they later divorced.
Mr. Coatney was employed over the years at the Litchfield Coca-Cola Bottling Plant, served as a police officer for the City of Mt. Olive, Illinois Dept. of Corrections and the Illinois Dept of Revenue. He owned and operated Denny’s Bait and Liquor for 20 years in Litchfield.
Mr. Coatney was a 36-year member of the Litchfield Volunteer Fire Department, VFW Post #3912, American Legion Post #436. He was an avid Bowler having bowled several “300” perfect games over the years.
Survivors include his two sons; Michael and his wife Carmen of Curryville, MO., Kevin and his companion Lacey Dwyer of Litchfield, IL., Two sisters; Karla Bononi of Hudson, FL., Karen and Husband Tom Franzen of Litchfield, IL. Four grandchildren; Matthew, Felisity, Josie and Dalton Coatney. Several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Coatney is preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, Steve Szczepanski, Grandparents Earl and Alva Coatney, Otto and Pearl Bierbaum. His brother-in-law Ed Bononi.
Funeral Services for Mr. Coatney will be conducted Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 12:00 Noon at the Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield, with cremation to follow the service. A private interment of ashes will be held at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery in Litchfield.
