Susanna Ruth “Sue” Helgen, 81, of Litchfield, passed away Thurs., Mar. 14, 2019 in Copper Creek Cottages Memory Care of Litchfield, surrounded by her family. She was born on March 16, 1937 in Belleville, IL, the daughter of Harold Milby & Ida M. (Jackson) Simpson. She graduated from Litchfield High School with the Class of 1955. On June 17, 1956, she married Edward William Helgen in St. Timothy United Methodist Church in Litchfield. He survives. Sue was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield where she was active with Zion Ladies Aid. She was a member of St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary, Beta Sigma Phi, PEO, and Litchfield Country Club where she played on the Friday night couple’s league. She enjoyed Cardinals Baseball, traveling & taking trips with First National Bank. Sue especially loved her grandchildren and time spent with them. Over the years, she worked with her father at Simpson Shoe Store in Litchfield and had managed the gift shop at St. Francis Hospital. Besides her husband Ed, she is survived by:

She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 great-grandson, Keck Hampton; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Otto & Hulda (Bentlage) Helgen; 1 niece, Shari Helgen Huntley.
Funeral services will be held Sat., Mar. 16, 2019 at 11 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Rev. Fred Kraemer will officiate. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Cemetery in Litchfield. Visitation will be held Friday from 3 – 7 p.m. in Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. The family suggests memorials to Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Sue Helgen Memorial Scholarship Fund.
