Barton Rogers Obituary

Barton L “Bart” Rogers, 85, of Litchfield, IL, formerly of Virden, passed away Tues., Oct. 30, 2018 at 5:17 p.m. in his home. 

He was born on March 17, 1933, a son of George Washington and Dorothy Alice (Hanley) Rogers. Mr. Rogers attended Litchfield Schools and was presented with his diploma at the Veterans Day ceremony, November 11, 2011 at Litchfield Community High School.  Mr. Rogers attended Lincoln Land Community College for 2 years. 

Mr. Rogers Served in the U.S. Marines Corps, from 1951-1960 and a veteran of the Korean War, 1951-1952. After serving in Korea, Mr. Rogers was stationed in various stations of duty inland and abroad. Upon his honorable discharge form the Marine Corps, he enlisted with the U.S. Army where he served with the Nike Hercules Missile Unit until the start of the Viet Nam War, where he served with 1st special forces group, the Green Berets, in Thailand, training volunteer soldiers to fight with U.S. Forces. After 27 years of service, Mr. Rogers retiring as First Sergeant from the U.S. Army, he returned to civilian life where he became a real estate agent and insurance salesman in the Virden area. 

Mr. Rogers was a member of Kniery-Knagg Post 436 of the American Legion, VFW Post 3912, AmVets Post 16, Litchfield Moose Lodge 1634, Eagles Arie 4499, Marine Corp League – Prairieland Leathernecks 1385 all of Litchfield.  He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Virden. Mr. Rogers took great pride in presenting numerous burial flags to area Veterans families as a part of the American Legion and VFW Funeral Honors Detail Teams.

Mr. Rogers was married to the former Marjorie L. Newman on June 1, 1962 in Virden, Mrs. Rogers passed away August 29, 2001.

 

He is survived by several local and out-of-town nieces and nephews. Local relatives are;

Sister in law, Dolores A. Rogers. Nephews; Rev. Mike (Gale) Rogers, Lloyd (Tammy) Rogers, John (Marty) Rogers, Richard Rogers, Barton W. (Brenda) Rogers, Felix (Verna) Powell. Local niece, Violet Eglehoff.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Rogers is preceded in death by three brothers; Harold W., Lloyd G. and Billie L. Rogers.  Six sisters; Ann Knamiller, Violet Montgomery, Lila Keiser, Carolyn Wilson and twin sisters Rose and Shirley in infancy.

 

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 3, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Litchfield Southern Baptist Church.  Rev Michael F. Rogers, Nephew of Mr. Rogers will officiate and burial will be in the Virden Cemetery in Virden, IL with military honors

Visitation will be Saturday morning from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. at the Church.

The family suggests memorials to the Litchfield Veterans Memorial Garden Fund.
