Joseph E. Vignos

April 19, 1927 - November 15, 2010

Joseph Evans Vignos, 83, of Litchfield, died Mon., Nov. 15, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield. He was born Apr. 19, 1927 in Waggoner, IL, a son of Jerome Edgar & Eva Mae (Nimmo) Vignos. He graduated from Waggoner High School in 1945. Mr. Vignos was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended basic training at Camp Roberts in California. He was sent to Reims, France and was stationed at an army depot where they salvaged army supplies and housed German POWs. After being discharged in Feb. 1947, he attended Milliken University. He was a member of Union Avenue Christian Church in Litchfield where he served as Deacon, Chairman of the Board of Trustees & Treasurer for several years. He was also a member of American Legion Post #701 in Waggoner & Litchfield Country Club. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing & golfing. He was first employed by Yates Motor Sales as a parts man & later for Schmidt Motor Co. as a bookkeeper. In 1960 he joined Zimmerman Equipment Co in Litchfield as General Manager. His engineering skills combined with Walter Zimmerman's plans, pioneered a continuous flow industrial grain dryer that is still used today. Joe retired from there as Vice President in 1988. He married Mary Alice Krell on Aug. 20, 1950 in Laurel Methodist Church in Springfield. Together they spent 21 winters in Green Valley, AZ and made many friends from all parts of the country. She survives. He is also survived by:

Several nieces & nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Willard "Kelly" Vignos in 1980;
1 sister & 2 brothers in infancy.

Funeral Information

Funeral services will be held Fri., Nov. 19, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in Union Avenue Christian Church in Litchfield. Rev. Jay Johnson & Rev. Tracy Siegman, Associate Minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Cemetery in Litchfield. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 in Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield.
