The Ariston Café was founded by Pete Adam, a Greek immigrant, in Carlinville, Illinois in 1924. The original café was located on Route 4, the predecessor of the Historic Route 66. In 1929, the Café was relocated to Litchfield, Illinois and moved into its present location on Route 66 in 1935. The owners of the Ariston Café believe the café to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest restaurant on Route 66. In 1992 the Ariston Café and the Adam family were inducted into the Route 66 Hall of Fame and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Litchfield LibraryThe Litchfield Library has an extensive collection of genealogy materials for Montgomery, Macoupin, Bond, and other surrounding counties. Census records are available on microfilm, as is the local newspaper from 1857 to the present. Other materials of interest are local cemetery listings, plat books and city directories, LiCoHi yearbooks, and many individual family histories. The Library also houses the majority of the Mongomery County Genealogical Society's collection.
