The Plummer Funeral Home has a history of being a family-owned and run funeral home. In 1940, Wilbert E. Ross and Maynard C. Becker created the Ross and Becker Funeral Home. The property, located at 404 East Union Avenue, was purchased from the Herbert Hood Estate. The former estate was remodeled to be more appropriate for funeral directing purposes. Included in the initial remodeling were a new casket showroom and a three-car garage. But the owners were careful to maintain the homelike atmosphere throughout the facility.

In 1949, Wilbert E. Ross purchased the half-interest of Maynard C. Becker. Ross and his wife, Esther Ross, who was also a licensed funeral director worked together for many years. In 1963, the funeral home received extensive remodeling, central air-conditioning and a new parlor was added at the front of the home. Bryan and Betty (Ross) Curry were also funeral directors for Ross Funeral Home at that time. Betty was Wilbert Ross’s niece and the Curry’s had been with the firm for sixteen years. Bryan Curry died on February 7, 1981 and Betty Curry died on July 11, 1985.

It was at that time that Wilbert decided to sell the funeral home and it was purchased on December 3, 1985 by Terry W. Plummer. At that time, the home was known at Ross-Plummer Funeral Home.

In 1991, the funeral home was renamed Plummer Funeral Home. That same year, a branch facility was built in Raymond, Illinois and was opened on August 11, 1991. The Raymond facility later closed and the building was sold to the Raymond United Methodist Church. In 1995, another major renovation was completed. The new additions included a chapel, lounge, restrooms and new embalming room. A new concrete parking lot was also added.
